College Counseling Overview

College counseling at CCS is woven throughout the school’s curriculum. Discussion of college issues begins in the 9th grade in a variety of classes; in their senior year, students are required to take a first-semester course which focuses on college applications. In addition, students and their families receive individualized counseling for the College Counseling staff who guide them through the complex process of college admissions. The goal of the College Counseling program is to help each student find the post-secondary placement – whether that is college or a “gap year” program - that is the right fit for him or her.

The College Counseling Office staff provide assistance with researching schools, navigating the standardized testing process, completing applications, and understanding financial aid options. The College Counseling Resource Center (located above the Library)offers a quiet environment where students can meet one-on-one with the College Counselor and peruse a wide variety of college materials. Office staff also organize many on-campus visits from colleges and university representatives so that students can learn more about schools firsthand.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Charleston Collegiate College Counseling Office (CCO) is to help each student find the most appropriate post-secondary placement. The CCO aims to help students clarify their thinking about post-secondary options, make informed choices, present themselves and their credentials as accurately and professionally as possible, and address any challenges they might encounter. CCS’ college counselors consider themselves to be advocates for students and partners with parents in the college admission process. The CCO abides by the Principles of Good Practice as defined by the National Association of College Admission Counseling. These include a strict adherence to ethical and respectful behavior by all parties involved in the college admission process.
