Standardized Testing

The Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test or PSAT is offered in October. All sophomores will take the exam for practice and juniors will take the exam as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program. The PSAT is a shortened version of the SAT Reasoning test, which measures critical reading, writing, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. The scores of the PSAT can be used as a "predictor" of what a student will score on the SAT. Click here to watch a video about understanding your PSAT/NMSQT score.

The Scholastic Assessment Test or SAT is the nation's most widely-used standardized test for admissions into colleges or universities. The test consists of sections in critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing. The SAT tests the critical skills needed for academic success in college. To register for the SAT and to view upcoming test dates, visit www.collegeboard.org. Students will not take the SAT at CCS; however, they can choose a testing site near where they live. The Charleston Collegiate testing code is 411152. This code will be used when signing up for each test. When registering for the SAT, students should only send scores to the colleges or universities to which they have applied. Since students can choose which scores are sent, they should wait to send the scores after they have attained the scores with which they are satisfied.

The American College Test or ACT consists of five sections in English, mathematics, reading comprehension, science reasoning and writing. When students register for the ACT, they MUST register for the ACT plus Writing. Colleges and universities will accept either the ACT or the SAT; however, they will only do so if the ACT score includes the "plus Writing" section of the test. To register and to view upcoming test dates, visit www.act.org. The Charleston Collegiate testing code is 411152. This code will be used when signing up for each test.

CCS does not register students for these standardized tests. Students are responsible for registering for these tests, paying for them, and reporting the scores to the colleges or universities to which they have applied. Students should refer to the "Timetable by Year" to determine when a test should be taken.
