College Visits and Other Events

Admission representatives from a variety of colleges visit Charleston Collegiate to introduce students to their schools. These representatives do not interview students; rather it is a chance for students to ask questions and learn more about colleges on their lists or ones they might not have previously considered. These visits take place during Morning Activity (9:36-10:21), unless otherwise noted. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are encouraged to attend

November 15, 2011: College Night: Financial Aid and Junior Updates. Come learn about options for financing your college education from Joshua Haugh, Associate Director of Financial Aid at The Citadel. ANY family interested in learning about financial aid and scholarships should attend. In addition, all juniors are required to attend; we will be discussing the junior timeline for the college admission process.

September 7, 6:00-7:30pm: CCS Senior College Night. ALL seniors and their parents are strongly encouraged to attend! Come meet CCS' new college counselors and learn about the application process and timeline. This is a great opportunity to ask questions! In the cafe.

August 31: Will O'Donnell (Mr. O'D!) from Savannah College of Art and Design. The Savannah College of Art and Design exists to prepare talented students for professional careers, emphasizing learning through individual attention in a positively oriented university environment.

August 31: Furman University is having a reception at the Francis Marion at 7pm.  Our Furman rep. will be there, in addition to Furman alumni and parents from the area.  It is a great opportunity for them to learn more about us and hear diverse perspectives about the Furman experience.

September 2: Lindsay Walker from Furman University. A private liberal arts university founded in 1826 and nationally acclaimed for its academic excellence, Engaged Learning program, Division I athletics and campus beauty. Approximately 700 in the freshman class.

September 9: Jan Macko from Lynn University. Lynn's Institute for Achievement and Learning offers internationally recognized programs for students with learning differences. Lynn is located in Boca Raton, FL. 

September 13, 7:30pm, Exploring College Options. Charleston Marriott, 170 Lockwood Blvd. Exploring College Options is a special recruitment program sponsored by the undergraduate admissions offices of five of the country's leading universities: Duke University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Stanford University. Representatives from the five universities will conduct brief slide presentations about their institution and answer your questions about the sometimes-mystifying world of college admissions. You will learn what distinguishes one fine university from another, what competitive colleges look for in the selection process, and what you can do to enhance your college application.

September 14: Jimmie Foster from College of Charleston. C of C is a public university with a combined graduate/undergraduate enrollment of over 11,000. The College retains its liberal arts heritage through its core curriculum, which includes a heavy emphasis on languages, literature, history, sciences and the arts.

September 19, 9:00-12:30: Charleston Area College Fair
All juniors and seniors will attend the Charleston Area College Fair - parents are welcome! Students will be able to meet and ask questions of representatives from approximately 100 colleges from across the Southeast and country.

September 21: Erin Huber from Meredith College. Meredith is a liberal arts women's college located in Raleigh, North Carolina. For the 2010-2011 academic year, there were approximately 2,300 students enrolled, including about 350 graduate students, making Meredith the largest women's college in the southeastern United States. 89% of students come from in-state.

September 23: Katie Hayes from Lees-McRae College. Lees-McRae is a private liberal arts institution with approximately 700 students. Their average class size is 15 students, and they provide a very supportive academic climate.

September 25, 7:00-8:00 p.m.: Washington University in St. Louis information session. Courtyard by Marriott Charleston, 35 Lockwood Drive.

September 27, 7:00-8:30 p.m. (check-in begins at 6:30 p.m.) College of Charleston, Clemson, USC Information Session. You will learn about each school's admissions requirements, scholarship and financial aid opportunities, scholar programs, and more. September 28: Tiffany Luder from Hollins University. A women's college with approximately 750 students. The 2010 Fiske Guide to Colleges lists Hollins among the top seven women's colleges in the country — and also lauds it as one of the small colleges and universities strong in art, film, and dance. 475-acre campus located in Roanoke, Virginia. 35,000 undergraduates at 10 institutions within one-hour's drive.

September 30: Carson Foushee from Mercer University. Mercer University is committed to an educational environment that embraces intellectual and religious freedom while affirming values that arise from a Judeo-Christian understanding of the world. With more than 8,000 students enrolled in 11 schools and colleges on campuses in Macon, Atlanta and Savannah, and at four Regional Academic Centers around the state, Mercer is consistently ranked among the nation’s leading institutions by such publications as U.S. News & World Report and the Princeton Review.

October 5: Korrinn Burgess from Converse College. Converse couples the benefits of a women’s college—the room to think and grow, an environment where opinions are valued and sought after—with strong academic programs in the arts and sciences, an uncommonly low undergraduate student–teacher ratio of 10:1 and plenty of opportunity for student-faculty collaboration and research.

October 13: Shea Cook from Oglethorpe University.Located in Atlanta and founded in 1835, Oglethorpe enrolls over 1,000 students representing 34 states and 36 countries. The university plays in the NCAA Division III Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Princeton Review’s The Best Colleges ranks Oglethorpe in its prestigious list in several places and also names it a Best Southeastern College.

October 14: Laura Tyndall from Charleston Southern University. Charleston Southern is one of South Carolina’s largest accredited, independent universities, enrolling approximately 3,200 students. Affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, the University’s vision is to be a Christian university nationally recognized for integrating faith in learning, leading and serving.

October 17: Caitlin O'Rourke from Queens University of Charlotte. Queens University of Charlotte is a private, co-ed, masters level university with a commitment to liberal arts and professional studies. Located in the heart of historic Charlotte, Queens serves approximately 2,600 undergraduate and graduate students through its College of Arts and Sciences, McColl School of Business, Blair College of Health (home to The Presbyterian School of Nursing), Wayland H. Cato, Jr. School of Education, James L. Knight School of Communication and Hayworth College for Adult Studies.

October 19: Sarah Hart from University of Virginia. Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University of Virginia sustains the ideal of developing, through education, leaders who are well-prepared to help shape the future of the nation. It is located in Charlottesville, VA.

October 20: Elon College.

October 21: Hilary Keahey from Hendrix College. A four-year, private, residential, coeducational college of liberal arts founded in 1876 and affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Located in Conway, AR, just 30 minutes from Little Rock.1,468 students from 43 states and 14 countries; 17 percent minority enrollment

October 24: Jade Perkins from Coker College. Coker offers a four-year program that emphasizes a practical application of the liberal arts as well as hands-on and discussion-based learning within and beyond the classroom. Located in Hartsville, Darlington County, South Carolina, Coker is within two hours of Charlotte, Columbia, Charleston and Myrtle Beach.

October 27: Ashley Pearson from Elon University. Elon University is a selective, independent, private university renowned as a national model for engaged learning, along with excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs. Elon's beautiful and historic campus in central North Carolina is designated as a botanical garden. Approx. 5,000 undergruates.

October 28: Matt Shilling from High Point University. Located in High Point, NC, High Point University is a private, liberal arts university affiliated with The United Methodist Church and dedicated to the Judeo-Christian principles of inclusiveness and diversity. Undergraduate enrollment: 3,300 students. 

October 31: Kathleen Roukous from Trident Technical College. Trident Technical College is a public, two-year, multi-campus community college that provides quality education and promotes economic development in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. TTC serves approximately 15,000 traditional and nontraditional curriculum students and offers university transfer associate degrees and applied technical associate degrees, diplomas and certificates. The curriculum includes programs in arts and sciences, agriculture, business, computer technology, engineering technology, health sciences, industrial technology, and public service.

November 1: Allison Weingart from Carnegie Mellon University. Located in Pittsburgh, PA, Carnegie Mellon University is a global research university with more than 11,000 students, 86,500 alumni, and 4,000 faculty and staff. Recognized for its world-class arts and technology programs, collaboration across disciplines and innovative leadership in education, CMU is consistently a top-ranked university.

November 2: Meredith Biber from Presbyterian College.

November 4: Will Hammond from Brevard College. Brevard College is a baccalaureate, residential, church-affiliated institution situated in the Southern Appalachian mountains. Offering an education in theoretical and applied liberal arts, Brevard engages and challenges students in integrating knowledge and practical experience. The programs and opportunities of the College provide graduates the foundation for further formal study, meaningful vocations, responsible citizenship, and lifelong personal and professional development.

November 9: Russell Moore from University of Alabama. Founded in 1831 as Alabama's first public college, The University of Alabama is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and service. Enrollment at The University of Alabama reached a record high of 30,232 for fall 2010, including 5,563 freshmen.

November 10: Jennifer Setzler from Clemson University.
