We are Pleased to Announce the New Headmaster
The Board of Trustees of Charleston Collegiate School is proud to announce the appointment of Carol H. Franek as Head of School, effective July 1, 2011.  The appointment followed months of rigorous search and candidate evaluation by the Board’s search committee. Mrs. Franek replaces Dr. J. Robert Shirley who will be retiring. For the past eleven years, Mrs. Franek was Head of Grace Episcopal School in Maryland.  Throughout her tenure at Grace Episcopal, Carol expanded and promoted the school in the community, built partnerships with the Audubon Society and NASA to complement school programs, and raised significant gifts for Capital improvements, annual fund, and scholarships.  She also championed the expansion of the school to include grades 7 and 8. Prior to serving as Head of School, Mrs. Franek served as Assistant Head of School, also at Grace.  Her teaching tenure was heavily focused on curriculum development, in both public and independent schools. She is credited with developing the Schuylkill Valley (PA) District model program for individualized instruction.  She also has extensive experience in teacher training and in 1996 added an international twist when she was invited to conduct teacher training in the Slovak Republic.  Carol had the opportunity to visit those same classrooms in four subsequent years to observe the results of her work in action.
Commenting on Mrs. Franek’s appointment, Board Chair Mrs.Nedra Hecker noted that “the entire board is excited about the experience and new ideas Carol will bring to CCS. Dr. Shirley has created a strong legacy and we are confident that Charleston Collegiate will continue to prosper under Carol’s leadership.”

Crisis Ministries
Upper School Students Karla Aguirre, Hunter McCoy, and Tyler Swain, and teachers Mrs. McDermott and Ms. Pendleton, recently visited Crisis Ministries in downtown Charleston to prepare meals for over 150 of our neighbors in need. The students worked hard to prepare a variety of hot foods, salads, desserts, and bread, and then served the meals to the guests. CCS students will continue to prepare and serve meals once a month at Crisis Ministries throughout the school year; any Upper School student is welcome to sign up to participate with Ms. Pendleton.

Sweetgrass Garden Coop
The 9th grade helped a brand new nonprofit organization, Sweetgrass Garden Coop, by building scarecrows last week. The organization was founded by three area residents with the goal of growing food and donating it to local food banks. The garden is located just down the road from the school at 3105 Plowground Road. The 9th grade students, armed with old clothes, hay, tools, and burlap sacks, made three scarecrows which will come in very handy during the growing season! CCS plans to continue to support SGC in a variety of ways throughout the year; currently, one of our students is creating a web site for them while another is designing a logo.

Race for the Cure
The 10th grade girls are supporting the Susan G Koman Race for the Cure this year for their community service.  They are decorating and putting names on all of the tulips that will make up the flower garden the day of the race.  The tulips are purchased through the race website in honor or in memory of someone that has faced breast cancer.  The girls have also formed the S.W.A.T (Sundevils Wanting A cure Today) team and will participate in the race.  Flooded with Flavor has agreed to be our sponsor and is purchasing t-shirts for all the girls.  Other students and/or members of the CCS community are welcome to join our team to race or buy a t-shirt.  All proceeds for t-shirt sales will go towards the team. Flooded with Flavor will also be having special sales that will donate a portion of their proceeds to our team.   To sign up for the team please visit www.komenlowcountry.org.

Coming the week of Sept. 22: ERBs and our first Head of School candidate visit!
During the week of Sept. 22, students in grades 2-10 will be taking the CTP4 tests designed by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB).  This test is designed as a “low-stakes” exam, the purpose of which is to test what a student knows at a given point in time, in order to identify strengths and weaknesses. It is intended to help teachers and administrators make decisions about classroom instruction. As such, there are no preparatory materials available for it. This makes the test a more accurate reflection of the student’s knowledge, and makes it a better diagnostic tool.

The results of your son or daughter’s performance on the CTP4 tests will be discussed with you during a future parent/teacher conference.   In the Lower School the classroom teachers will determine testing times.  In the Middle and Upper School these tests will be administered in the mornings and a revised class schedule will be followed in the afternoons.  Please help your children achieve success on these tests by ensuring that they eat a nutritious breakfast and get a good night’s sleep!  If you have any additional questions, you may contact your division head or visit http://www.erbtest.org/parents/

In addition, next week we will host our first Head of School candidate! She will be on campus Thursday and Friday, Sept. 23-24. All parents are invited to meet her during the 2:00-3:00 question-and-answer session in the cafe.

Pinwheels for Peace

Charleston Collegiate celebrated the international Day of Peace, September 21st, by creating a visual public statement about peace. Students form Preschool through the sixth grade created colorful pinwheels and then planted them on the front lawn of our campus. Students also drew pictures and wrote about what peace means to them and shared their ideas with each other.  The Middle and Upper school girls chorus sand Dona Nobis Pacem and the Media class filmed the whole event.

Project Learning Tree and Greenschools
CCS just became a SC Project Learning Tree Environmental School!  For more than 30 years, Project Learning Tree® (PLT) has provided environmental education, professional development, and curriculum materials to PreK-12 teachers.  PLT’s supplementary curricula help teachers address teaching objectives while helping students learn the critical thinking skills they need to make responsible decisions about the environment.  PLT helps young people learn how to think, not what to think about complex environmental issues.

PLT doesn’t just increase student awareness of environmental issues through classroom studies.  It helps students transfer their knowledge into positive environmental action in schools and communities. Through its GreenWorks! service-learning program, for example, PLT provides grants for students to “learn by doing” in hands-on projects that improve an aspect of their community’s environment.

KIVA
The ninth graders in Ms. Pendleton's Applied Technology class are supporting small-business entrepreneurs through microloans. Using Kiva.org and funds supplied by the teacher, the students each chose one entrepreneur from another country to support. Learning about microfinance is part of the curriculum in which students create their own nonprofit organizations. Check out their lender's page at: http://www.kiva.org/lender/ccs or come see their bulletin board outside of the computer lab!

Blue/Gold Competition

Blue=85 points                  Gold=225 points

This year at CCS, each student has been assigned to either the Blue Team or the Gold Team.  They will be competing in events all year long to try to win points for their team.  These events may be school-wide, or they may span a single division, or even just one class. The events will range from the physical (a kickball game), to the academic (a writing contest), all the way to the artistic (a yearbook cover contest). The winning teams will receive recognition and a grand prize at the end of the year.  The culminating event is a school-wide field day.  These teams are a wonderful way for students of all ages to get to know one another.
