From the Guidance Counselor
Note from Guidance August 2009 Welcome to a new school year! I am the Guidance Counselor for Middle and Upper School. Each month I will be discussing important Guidance issues with your child. The first issue that will be discussed is bullying. We the faculty of Charleston Collegiate School believe that everybody should enjoy our school equally and feel safe, secure, and accepted regardless of color, race, gender, popularity, athletic ability, intelligence, religion, or nationality. Starting on September 1, I will be going into the classroom and discussing our school policy on bullying. I will educate students about the different forms or bullying. We will discuss proactive bullying measures and hopefully establish an atmosphere where students feel safe reporting incidents of bullying and confident that they will be dealt with. Our Overcoming Obstacles curriculum will be taught once a week by the advisors during your child's advisory period. The lessons are meant to engage students in motivational activities focused on communication, decision making, and goal setting. The first two lessons in Middle School will help students identify their own learning styles. This will enable them to develop study practices to help them learn more effectively and be more successful here at school. In Upper School, the first two lessons will focus on identifying strengths and on, leadership. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of these guidance issues please feel free to contact me. If there are changes in your child's behavior or circumstances at home that may be affecting your child please let me know. I am looking forward to a wonderful year! Look for monthly guidance updates in the parents section of the school website. Sincerely, Jill Kujawski [E-mail] Monday, March 01, 2010 March & April Guidance Update The character education topics for March and April include diversity, healthy relationships, and sex education. The classroom activities will focus on exploring the diversity among us, developing the character trait of tolerance, and recognizing stereotypes. The sexual health lessons will be grouped by gender and provide information about reproduction, disease and contraception. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns as we cover these topics. Sincerely, Posted by at 8:03 pm Monday, February 01, 2010 February Guidance Update I would like to introduce myself as the substitute guidance counselor for Jill Kujawski for the remainder of the school year. Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. The character education topics for February are "Friendship and Self-Image". The classroom activities will focus on building a positive self-concept, and recognizing peer pressure. While it is important to watch our weight and keep in shape, some people let eating become a problem by being so focused on body image that their lives are controlled by this concern. We will briefly discuss different types of eating disorders and talk about ways to keep our minds and bodies healthy. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call or e-mail me. Sincerely, Jill Kujawski Posted by at 4:36 pm Tuesday, November 03, 2009 November Guidance Update: Health & Hygiene My Body: Health and Hygiene This month the guidance topic is "My Body: Heath and Hygiene". We will be discussing the relationship between healthy behaviors and the prevention of injury, illness and disease. We will go over good personal hygiene and basic cold-prevention strategies. Toward the end of this month, the girls and boys will be separated to discuss the important topics of puberty and development. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call or e-mail me. Sincerely, Jill KujawskiPosted by at 12:00 am Tuesday, September 29, 2009 October Guidance Update: Drug Awareness "COME WITH ME AND BE DRUG FREE" This month in Character Education your child will be discussing drug and alcohol prevention. Students will gain knowledge on the dangers of illegal drugs, and we'll talk about peer pressure and finding healthy alternatives. We hope that through education and personal commitment students will choose to live drug-free lives. Also, during this month a speaker from Mothers Against Drunk Driving will be speaking to the Middle and Upper School students. The 4th and 5th graders will get into the spirit by making banners and posters about healthy choices to display in the hallways. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. It commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe. CCS will be celebrating Red Ribbon Day on October 21 with a schoolwide assembly. Students are encouraged to wear red clothing, red ribbons, bracelets, and stickers on that day to show their support! If you have any questions or concerns about this guidance topic please feel free to call or e-mail me.
