Early Childhood
At Charleston Collegiate School, learning begins with curiosity. In our Early Childhood program, Preschool 3’s and PreKindergarten students are active participants in joyful, purposeful discovery from their very first day.
Every child is known, respected, and valued for their unique strengths and learning style. Through collaborative experiences in outdoor education and our classroom jobs program, students begin developing leadership, responsibility, and a strong sense of community from an early age.
Academic readiness at this age isn’t about rigid expectations. Instead, it’s about engaged learning. Our youngest students ask questions, explore their environment, collaborate with classmates, and build confidence through meaningful play. Guided by caring teachers and supported by small class sizes, children develop independence, resilience, and a strong academic foundation.
Through hands-on exploration, outdoor education across our 30-acre Johns Island campus, and experiences rooted in our core values, Early Childhood students begin building the skills and mindset that will carry them throughout their CCS journey and far beyond.
The Preschool 3’s program focuses on supporting each child as they grow socially and learn to play in collaboration with others. Children are exposed to letters, numbers and science concepts through structured and unstructured play, outdoor exploration, and projects.
The PreKindergarten program uses hands-on activities to teach students in an early academic setting. Students enjoy science with topics such as body systems, ecology, and marine life. In math, our young students learn to recognize and accurately form numbers 1-20, build number sense, problem solve, learn sequence numbers, recognize place value, and count by 10s, while the language based pre-reading program focuses on letter identification and letter sounds.
