Middle School
Building Confidence, Voice, and Purpose
Middle School is where students begin to take ownership of their learning and discover who they are. At Charleston Collegiate, they’re supported by engaged teachers, challenged academically, and encouraged to take risks in a safe, supportive environment.
With the right balance of freedom and structure, students build the skills—and confidence—they need for high school and beyond. Students are given voice and choice in their learning and school experience, supported in a culture where they can fail forward and grow through mistakes, and encouraged to connect their learning to real-world purpose and meaning.
Sixth grade is a year of transition, where students begin to develop independence while building strong academic habits. The core program includes humanities (Language Arts and Ancient History), math, science, and Spanish.
Learning extends beyond the classroom through rotating experiences in Outdoor Education, Wilderness Survival Skills, Adventure Leadership, the arts, and engineering. Students also engage in advisory, clubs, and service, with Winterim offering a weeklong immersive learning experience that brings classroom concepts to life.
In seventh grade, students take greater ownership of their learning as academic expectations increase and instruction becomes more personalized. Humanities integrates Language Arts with Early American History, while math pathways include Math 7 or Pre-Algebra. Science continues with inquiry-based learning, and Spanish study deepens communication skills.
Students continue to explore electives and special areas—including outdoor leadership, arts, engineering, and entrepreneurship—while expanding their involvement in advisory, clubs, and service. Winterim remains a highlight, providing hands-on, real-world learning experiences.
Eighth grade prepares students for Upper School with increased independence and academic rigor. Humanities combines Language Arts and Modern American History, while math options include Pre-Algebra or Algebra I (upper school credit). Students may also earn upper school credit through Spanish I, alongside continued study in science.
Experiential learning deepens through Winterim and opportunities like Pre-Internships and Career Studies. Opportunities such as Student Government and electives in Outdoor Education, Art, and Leadership allow students to apply their learning in meaningful ways, building confidence and preparing them for the next step in their academic journey.
